The Impact of Using OpenWrt on the Security of Network Routers

چکیده :

Network routers are targets of cyberattacks such as DDoS, intrusion, and spoofing due to their critical role in communication infrastructures. This research investigates the impact of OpenWrt 24.10, an open-source operating system, on router security in comparison with RouterOS 7.16, a proprietary operating system (based on data extracted from a study by Prajapati and Patel (2023) and reports from the OpenWrt Project (2024) on the MikroTik hAP ac2 device). The results showed that OpenWrt performs better than RouterOS in terms of DDoS attack mitigation rate (82% vs. 50%), intrusion detection rate (92% vs. 65%), and detection time (1.8 seconds vs. 4.0 seconds). This superiority is attributed to the nftables firewall, WPA3 support, IDS/IPS tools, strong encryption, advanced authentication, and comprehensive log management. OpenWrt consumes more resources (72% CPU, 125 MB RAM) compared to RouterOS (55% CPU, 95 MB RAM) and requires technical knowledge. Comparison tables include essential security topics such as encryption, authentication, and resistance against attacks. This study suggests that OpenWrt is suitable for enterprise networks with high security priorities, provided that technical teams are trained and user-friendly interfaces are developed. Future research can examine other MikroTik models and real-world networks.
