Quaternized pectin

چکیده :
As one of the main components of planet cell wall, pectin is abundant in nature and mainly extracted from plant leaves, roots and other parts (1). Commercially pectin is extracted from different vegetable sources such as citrus peel, apple pomace, sugar beet pulp and others (2). The quaternized pectin (QP) with antimicrobial properties were prepared by reacting pectin with 3-chloro-2-hydroxyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (CHPTAC) in presence of sodium hydroxide(3). In a modified procedure, we have efficiently synthesized a cationic deravative of pectin by reacting aqueous solution of citrus pectin with glycidyl trimethyl ammonium chloride. After dialyzing the quaternized pectin solution using dialysis tubing cellulose membrane, we put the solution stay at room temperature for a few days in order to evaporate the excess of water to form thin films. The synthesized pectin was charecterized by FT-IR and NMR spectra and the result confirmed that the qaternized pectin was successfully synthesized and thus the physical properties such as antimicrobial activity and potential application in biomedical purposes would be intoduced herein.
